Peyton has a lot of hair. Her hair is a work in progress but I am asked all the time what I use in her hair. Looks like other moms have the same issues. The popular "Baby" shampoo's never worked for her. When she was born there were no options like Cara B and Shea Moisture for babies. I had to try other products more suitable for her hair. I'm not ingredient obsessed but try to stick with products that are free of parabens, sulfate and harsh alcohols. You should definitely use what works best for you. Here is a little info about about the ingredients.
Parabens: Preservatives that can mimic estrogen. Estrogen and babies doesn't sound like a good mix to me.
Sulfates: Detergents that produce lather. Can cause eye irritation, dry skin and tangled hair. I will use a product with sulfate every once in a while for a deep cleaning. Not for weekly washes.
Harsh Alcohols: Evaporate quickly and will cause dry hair cuticles, therefore drying out the hair.
Here are some our favorite products that we use on the regular and why we heart them! Of course not at the same time! LOL! Depends on the style.
Shampoo
Shea Moisture Retention Shampoo: This shampoo is gentle and does not dry out the hair.
4Naturals Extra Moist Detangling Shampoo: This is our new favorite detangler! I use this also. Helps me to comb through Peyton's hair with out any snags!
Miss Jessies Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo: This product does have sulfate so I only use it if she needs a deep cleaning. This product didn't leave Peyton's hair dry.
A good conditioner is a must! When I meet celeb stylist, Gabi this summer, she reiterated that you should condition your hair every time you wash. Same goes for kids! I don't leave conditioners in Peyton's hair long at all. By the time I am done with her bath, I rinse it out.
4Naturals Extra Moist Detangling Conditioner: This conditioner works wonders quickly! Hair is soft and tangle free!
EDEN Bodyworks All Natural Deep Conditioner: This is great for a more intense conditioning. I will use this if Peyton's hair has been extremely dry for the week.
Shea Moisture Restorative Conditioner: Great to put moisture back in the hair. It can also be used as a leave-in. I will put this in her hair before swimming.
Styling Products
4Naturals Afro Stretch Curl Cream: This product is awesome at moisturizing and leaving Peyton's curls more relaxed / stretched when she wears it out! I can use it multiple times on her hair between washes with no build up!
Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding: This pudding gives Peyton's hair more hold and defines her curls when she wears her hair out.
Moisturizers
CaraB Naturally Moisture Spray: Great for use in the morning to jump start the hair styling process. This spray make it easier to comb or brush the hair with out breaking.
Bee Mine Luscious Hair Cream: Great moisture to add to hair after washing. I use this more when I put Peyton's hair in ponytails.
Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie: Great for dry hair. I can use this for booth ponytails and wearing her hair down.
Styling Gels
4Naturals Slick-it Pomade: I have been using this on Peyton's edges. This pomade is very moisturizing. It is not one of the gels that look good for a few hours then leave her edges bone dry.
Curls Passion Fruit Pomade: This smells so good and keeps her edges down. Not drying as well.
Hair Oil
EDEN Bodyworks Jojoba Moni Hair Oil: Peyton's scalp has to be oiled because of her dry hair. I spray this on her scalp immediately after washing. I use this on my hair as well. I spray it between my extensions!
Whew, that was a lot! I hope this post was helpful to assist you in finding products for your children or yourself! This list could change as we try new products. Have you tried any of the products that I mentioned? Which one is your favorite?
*I was NOT compensated in any way for this post. Some of the products were sent to me for review but most of them were purchased with my own money. Opinions are my own.
That's a lot of products. I use a shampoo, deep conditioner, and moisturizer for my girls.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips! I'm in the process of switching my daughter over from baby products. I was thinking about trying the Kinky Curly line for babies but I may try the Shea Moisture brand instead. I feel like her little afo is getting bigger and bigger by the day, LOL!!!

This is a great post! I use the Shea Moisture Shampoo for my daughter as well as the Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I think we use an aloe vera mix of aloe vera juice, rosewater, and vegetable glycerine more than anything. It doubles as a detangler and daily moisturizing spritzer for her.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing reviews on these products!
I use Shea Moisture too. I agree with you about using a sulfate every now and then for deep cleaning. I use Shea Moisture and Carol's Daughter on myself and Nadia sometimes.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I'll have try these.
ReplyDeleteWe are big shea moisture fans as well. I really like that line
ReplyDeleteReally got to find the 4 Naturals stuff...I have tried everything on this list, but not that. We love Kinky Curly products!!!! And I love Curls Passion Fruit Pomade to hold her hair down when it is back....good stuff, Trina.
ReplyDeleteWow, I probably heard of half of the products you listed. I only use Baby Shampoo for Madison's hair and Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner. O and Just for me moisturizer. I think I'm going to go out and get some of the more natural hair products. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great lineup! I created my own mist to my baby girl's hair that I really like. I didn't like the SM conditioner for me, so I use it for her. When it's done, I'm going to switch to CARA B!
